In this tutorial, we are creating a hairy cartoon creature. 😀 For this project, we will use Adobe Illustrator. Let the fun begins.
Step 1
Open a new document in Illustrator, size doesn't matter. Using a Stare tool (star tool is located under a rectangular tool drop menu) draw a star, set the radius 1 to 0.8, radius 2 to 1.7, points to 32. Set the fill color to white, stroke to a gradient. Resize the star and place it in the center of the artwork.
Step 2
Now we will set the color for our bird. With the ellipse tool make a circle, apply the current gradient. Go to Window select Gradient, in the pop-up window we will change color. For this project, I chose to go with a pink bird. Of course, you can choose whatever color you like. When you are done with choosing colors, take the eyedropper tool, and change the color of the main object. This is my color settings.
Step 3
With, Direct Selection tool (white arrow), select the main object. As you make a selection, small dots will appear. Take the dots and move a little down. We are trying to round the edges. But be sure to select the entire object so that you can evenly around all the edges. Now we will make a copy of the object. Go to Edit - Copy - Paste in Front, scaled-down, the copy object, and place it in the middle of the object.
Step 4
With a Move tool (V) select both objects. Go to Object - Blend - Blend Option, set the options: Spacing: Specified Steps, set the steps to 100, Orientation, choose the second in order. Go to Objects - Blend - Make.
Step 5
And now the fun begins. Go to Effect - Distort & Transform - Pucker & Bloat set to -17%. Go to Effect - Distort & Transform - Roughen, set the options to Size: 17%, mark Relative, Detail: 0, Point: Smooth.
With a Move tool (V) select the small object in the middle, right-click select Isolate Selection and move it up, like on the picture below.
Step 6
Now that we have a body of the bird it is time to make some eyes. With the ellipse tool make a long ellipse shape, this will be our base for the eyes. Add the same gradient that our bird is. Go to the Transparency menu (go to the window and open transparency ) set the blending mode to Multiply. Make a copy, placed them next to each other, and group them.
Make another long ellipse shape, set the fill to light grey, and slightly darker grey set to Radial gradient. This is gon to be sclera, the white outer layer of the eyeball. Make smaller ellipse shape, change it to a blue color, this is gon to be our iris. Now make another smaller ellipse shape, change the color to black this is gon to be our pupillary. Place them on top of each other starting from sclera then iris and pupillary. In the end, we will add some life to the eyes by adding a light source. Make a white ellipse shape and place them on the edges of the iris. For me, this gives some more depth to the eyes, but you can skip this part if you don't like the effect. Group all elements of the eyes, right-click choose transform - reflection chooses vertical and press copy. Now we have both eyes. Place them to the base of the eyes, that we made earlier, and transfer them to the bird.
Step 7
In the last step, we will add the nose to our friend. With the ellipse tool, color set on orange, make the oval shape and placet between the eyes. Pick the slightly bright orange color, choose the Mesh tool (U), and click on the middle of the nose. This will give some depth to the nose.
And that is it for this tutorial, our fluffy friend is done. Thanks for reading the article I hope you liked it, and we'll read on in the next one. 😇😇
