In this tutorial, I'm going to show you a quick method to create the look of watercolor painting from photos. I'm using a watercolor paper texture that we'll use to create a pattern and black and white image of brushstrokes that you can download in the source file. Let the fun begins.
Step 1
Open the paper texture and go to Edit - Define Pattern, name your pattern and press OK. Open the photo you want to use for this project. Adjust your resolution to 72 pixels/inch to ensure that the filter settings we will use have similar results. The width and height can be any amount. Next, convert your image into a smart object, right-click, and select convert to smart object. Make a copy (Ctrl + J). Add a new layer, fill it with the background color (press Ctrl + delete). Click the "FX" icon and click Pattern Overlay. Immediately the solid color is replaced with the last pattern we saved whish is the watercolor paper texture. Set the Blending Mode to Normal, Opacity 100%, Scale 17%. We want to change its Blending Mode, however, in order for the blending mode to work, we need to first convert the pattern overlay into the smart object.
Step 2
Next, we'll add a Paint Daubs filter. Go to Filter - Filter Gallery, open the Artistic folder and click on the Paint Daubs, set the brush size to 4, the sharpness to 6, and brush type to Wide Sharp.

Click the blending option icon, and change the blending mode to Lighten.
Go to Filter - Blur - Smart Blur, set the Radius to 10, the Threshold to 30, and Quality to High.
Click the adjustment layer icon, and click Vibrance. Drag the vibrance slider all the way to the right to increase the vibrancy of the colors. We want to affect just the more muted colors and leaves the already well-saturated colors alone.
Step 4
Next, we'll add pencil lines. Make the middle layer visible and active. Go to Filter - Filter Gallery and open the Stylize folder, click Glowing Edges. The Edge Width is 1, the Edge Brightness is 12, the Smoothness is 15. Click the adjustment layer icon and click Invert. Since we want it to affect just the one layer below its glowing edges layer, we need to clip it. Press Alt + Ctrl + G to activate clipping mask. Click the adjustment layer icon again, and click Black and White then clipped to the glowing edges layer. Make the glowing edges layer active and change the blending mode to Multiply.
Step 5
Next, we'll adjust our image tonal range. Make the watercolor layer active, click the adjustment layer icon, and click Curves. Add subtly contrast.
Step 6
Upload the Black and White brushstroke and re-size it so that fits the image. Open the Channels Panel, press control ( Ctrl) click on any of the channels to make a selection of all tones.
Open back the layer panel, and drag the brushstroke image to the trashcan since we have its selection. Make the Pencil lines layer active and click the layer mask icon to make a layer mask of selection next to the photo. Go to layer mask press and hold Alt as you drag a copy of next to the photo. If you want to adjust the contrast of your image, even more, go back to a curves adjustment layer and adjust the curves to your liking.
