Turning a Photo Into an Oil Painting in Photoshop (Without Oil Filter)

In this tutorial, we will create an oil painting effect, without even using the Oil Paint filter in Photoshop. Since the oil paint filter is not working in all photoshop versions, we will use another new, easy method to create this painting effect. Let the fun begins.

First of all, you should check the image size that you are working whit. Your image should not be lower than 1500 pixels in width or height. Press Ctrl + J to duplicate your layer. Go to Image - Adjustments and choose Shadows/Highlights. Shadows refer to the darkest areas in your image, and Highlights, refer to the brightest area in your image. By increasing the highlights amount, the highlighted area will get darker. By increasing shadows amount, the shadows areas will get brighter. I will increase Shadow by 5%.

Next, we will add contrast to the image by changing the Level value. Go to Image - Adjustments - Levels and add some contrast.

Press Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer. Go to Filter - Other and choose High Pass, set the radius to 2 pixels, and change the blending mode to Overlay. This will add some sharpening, and it will add more detail to the image.

Select both layers, right-click, and select Merge Layers.  With your image layer selected, go to Filter - Sharpen, and choose Unsharp Mask. Keep amount below 150% and radius at 2 pixels with 0 Threshold

Now we are ready to apply the Oil Effect. With your layer selected, go to Filter - Stylize, then choose Diffuse and change the mode to Anisotropic.

You may see some imperfections in your image. We want to apply the Diffuse filter about 3 to 5 times to give as a good effect. To handle this problem, every time you wanna apply the Diffuse filter, you should rotate your image 90 degrees. Go to Image - Image Rotation and choose 90 clockwise. This will apply the diffuse filter from different angles. Repeat this procedure 4 times. Which means we will rotate the image 4 times and then apply filter 4 times.

With your layer selected, go to Filter - Noise - Reduce Noise filter, increase Smooth to 10 and keep all other values at 0. This will make the skin smoother.

Now, we are going to sharpen our image, again. Go to Filter - Sharpen - Unsharp Mask, this will give us some extra details. Keep amount below 100, set the radius at 2 pixels, and set the Threshold at 0. Rename the layer oil painting.

Make a copy of the oil painting layer (Ctrl + J), go to Filter - Other - High Pass and keep radius at 2 pixels. Change the blending mode to Overlay and rename the layer to details.

With the top layer selected, press Alt + Ctrl + Shift + E to merge the layers into a new layer, rename layer into tone. Next, go to Image - Auto Tone. Decrease the opacity if needed.
