How to Create an Awesome Camouflage Text Effect

In this tutorial, we are creating an awesome, camouflage text effect from a photo using Photoshop. Let the fun begins.

Step 1

Open the new document, size 1342px by 1080px with a resolution of 72 pixel/inch. Upload image that you would like to use for this project, and an image of parchment paper. Hide the paper texture layer, and make the photo layer active. Make two copies by pressing Ctrl + J, twice. Hide the copies and make the original layer active. Add a new layer, we'll fill an empty layer with 50% gray. To do this press Shift + the F5 key at the top of your keyboard to open the Fill window (or go to Edit - Fill) click 50%. Make the first copy layer visible and active.

Step 2

The next step is to make a selection around the subject that you want to be camouflaged. Open your Quick selection tool and draw it over the inside of the subject to select it. Click a layer mask icon to make a layer mask of the selection next to the active layer. Next, we'll create a Displacement Map of the subject we're going to camouflage, which will be used to warp our text around it. First, make a composite snapshot of our visible image, by pressing Alt + Ctrl + Shift + E. By pressing Ctrl + Shift + U we'll remove the color (desaturate the layer). Go to Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur. Blur it 2 pixels. Click the icon at the upper, right corner of the layer panel and click Duplicate Layer. In pop-up window set the Destination: New, and name it Displacement. Go to File - Save As. Save to your desktop as Photoshop PSD document.

Step 3

We can delete the black and white composite snapshot since we already created a displacement map from it. Desaturate the first layer copy (layer with a layer mask) and change its blending mode to Overlay. Make a new layer, below the paper texture layer. In this layer, we'll place our text. Find a block of text that expresses the sentiments of your image. Open your type tool, chose the font, I'm using Matura MT Script Capitals. Set the color to black, size at 36 pt, and left alignment. Place your cursor at the upper, left corner, or near it drag it across near or at the lower, right corner. Replace with your text. Copy and paste your text until your text fills the block. Change the color of the text to a very dark brown color (160c04).

Step 4

Next, we'll wrap our text around our subject, using a displacement map, we saved earlier. Select the text layer, click the icon at the upper, right corner, and click convert to Smart object. Go to Filter - Distor - Displace, set the Horizontal and Vertical Scales at 15, Strech to Fit and Repeat Edge Pixels. Find and click your displacement file that we saved earlier and click OK

Step 5

Make a top layer visible and active. Open your Quick selection tool, and drag it over the other subject to select it. Go to Select - Select and Mask, check Smart Radius, drag the radius up to 3 px. Check Decontaminate Color, which prevents color fringing along the edges of your subject, set amount to 100%. Set the Output to Layer with a layer mask.

Step 6

Double click the top layer to open Layers Style window. Click Drop Shadow, set the blending mode to Multiply, color black, Opacity 30%, Angel 32, Distance: 40, Spread: 0, Size: 35.
