Text Masking Effect

In this tutorial, I'm going to show you how to create this text masking effect using Photoshop. The font that we will use in these projects is britanni c bold. Let the fun begins.

Step 1

The first thing I'm going to do is remove the background from the model layer using a mask. You can see my post How to mask an object in Photoshop where I explain thoroughly how to use a mask in Photoshop. Add a new layer, with the paint bucket tool fill it with white color. If is necessary, re-size the model. Select a type tool but in the type tool, right-click and make sure that you have vertical type selected. Select the color black and type the word BOLD. Re-size the type layer and make sure that the letter "B" goes a little bit outside of the model head. But you have to make sure that the whole model photo is a little bit bigger than the word so it covers the entire word and that is really important. If you are not sure whether the type layer is in the same size as the model layer, simply select your photo and press Ctrl + T, the box will pop-up and all you need to do is make sure that the model layer covers the text layer.

Step 2

Next, activate the layer mask of the model layer, select the brush tool, and in the color make sure it's black, hardness 100%. Then go and erase everything that's inside the round letter and everything that's on the left side of the word.

Step 3

Next, we need a selection of the word. Make sure that the layer mask of the model layer is active, hold the control key (Ctrl) and click on the word thumbnail (T). Go to Select - Modify - Expand set Expand By to 6. If you zoom in the selection is a little bit bigger than the word and that's exactly what we need.

Make sure that the model layer mask is active, set color to black, and press Alt + Backspace, so that everything that's inside of the selection will be erased.

Step 4

Make a copy of the model layer, and place it on the top of the text layer. Right-click on the layer mask and select delete layer mask. So we have an entire photo. Right-click and select clipping mask so that photo will only show up inside the word. 

Step 5

Select the text layer, click the "FX" icon, and click Drop Shadow. Set the blending mode to Linear Burn, Opacity at 40%, Angle 90, uncheck use Global light, Distance: 6, Size: 7 and the final effect is ready.
